Our closest neighbor to the south, Mexico has only 10% of its land farmable. It is Latin America’s fourth largest country with land features ranging from dry in the north with a volcanic plateau in the center and mountains and rainforest in the south.
Ethnicity:
61% of the population is Mestizo, or of Spanish/Amerindian descent. Spanish speaking but having a distinct culture.
28% of the population is Amerindian breaking down into two major groups: Spanish speaking but with Amerindian culture, or those groups speaking Amerindian languages while maintaining their distinct cultures.
9% of the population are Euro-American or of European descent. Largely of Spanish origin, but including American, Russian, German, Italian and Basque antecedents.
The predominant language is Spanish. Mexico is the largest Spanish-speaking nation. There are a total of 298 languages.
History:
The center of the Aztec empire was Mexico until the 16th century when Spanish explorers brought smallpox to the New World. Under Spanish control until 1821. Now a federal democracy.
Church:
94.26% of the population is Christian
The Need:
Mexico, like the US, is in need of discipleship. There is a need for committed men and women of God to go into Mexico and teach and encourage believers to not only pursuer a deeper relationship with God, but to accept the challenge of the Great Commission, within their home country and into the world.
