Focus Nations: Cuba

Prayer Needs:
Please pray for the government to ease restrictions on Christian literature and Bibles, for the demise of spiritist religions and for the unreached majority to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. Please pray for Christian workers to go to Cuba. Please pray about being the answer to these prayers.

Geography:
Ninety miles off the Florida coast, Cuba is the third largest island in the Caribbean.

Ethnicity:
Spanish speaking Hispanics of mixed heritage.

Government:
Communist dictatorship under Fidel Castro since 1959. Politically and economically isolated due to the US blockade and subsequent trade embargo.

Church:
Officially secular, Cuba has declared discrimination against Christians illegal. However Cuba has a long history of arbitrarily arresting, detaining and discriminating against Christians. This persecution has become les frequent in recent years, but it still happens. There are reports that Castro’s son is a Christian.

Cults:
The Cuban government encourages the “cultural” African-Caribbean spiritist religions and practices. Many of these resemble Haitian Voodoo.

The Need:
There is a great need in Cuba for Bibles, teaching materials and for people to go to Cuba to train, support and encourage the Christian leadership.
